PET bottles are more environmentally friendly than glass bottles and aluminum cans

Date:2017/9/15 Hits:1835
A survey commissioned by the PET Resin Association (PETRA) showed that disposable PET bottles have a smaller environmental impact throughout their lifecycle than aluminum cans or glass bottles. The survey conducted by the Franklin Institute compared the total energy consumption, solid waste, and greenhouse gas emissions per 100000 ounces of soft drinks packaged in 20 ounce PET bottles, 8 ounce glass bottles, or 12 ounce aluminum cans. The survey stated that the results showed that PET bottles emitted fewer greenhouse gases, generated less waste, and consumed less energy throughout their entire lifecycle. When comparing the energy consumption, emissions, and solid waste of 10000 equally sized 12 ounce containers, the overall energy consumption is similar. However, the greenhouse gas emissions from PET bottles are only 2/3 of those from aluminum cans and about half of those from glass bottles. When comparing 12 ounce PET bottles with 12 ounce aluminum cans or 12 ounce glass bottles, the former produces fewer pounds of solid waste. However, in terms of volume, the solid waste generated by aluminum cans is 16.5 cubic yards, PET bottles are 29.9 cubic yards, and glass bottles are 37.3-44.1 cubic yards. After comparing 100000 ounces of soft drinks packaged in 20 ounce PET bottles, 8 ounce glass bottles, and 12 ounce aluminum cans, the survey found that PET bottles emit 59% less greenhouse gases during their lifecycle than aluminum cans and 77% less than glass bottles. The total energy consumption of PET bottles is 11 million BTU per 100000 ounces of soft drinks, 16 million BTU for aluminum cans, and 26.6 million BTU for glass bottles. The total amount of solid waste generated from PET bottles is 302 pounds, aluminum cans are 767 pounds, and glass bottles are 4457 pounds. The solid waste volume of PET is 0.67 cubic yards, aluminum cans are 0.95 cubic yards, and glass bottles are 2.14 cubic yards. The life cycle analysis of this survey includes the entire period from raw material extraction to container manufacturing and post consumption disposal and regeneration. PETRA Executive Director Ralph Vasami said, "This survey once again confirms the excellent environmental profile of PET and its value as food and beverage packaging. Since 2005, multiple independent life cycle analyses have included PET containers as survey objects, and the results without exception indicate that PET has a smaller impact on the environment compared to glass, metal, or other plastics Related news: Bayer: Technological innovation and environmental protection are dual "engines".
